Challenge to Mastodon : What is the softest yarn you can find in the Bi Pride flag colours? Currently we are looking at Knitpicks Merino (Stroll), estimated cost for project $15.

Does anyone have other recommends? Can I get Cashmere in those colours for less then an arm and a leg? Baby alpaca? That stuff that comes from rabbits?

Forgot to specify: Sock/fingering weight.

@Canageek do you want soft, or do you want it to wear well? You have to pick. :)

@Canageek Is the cost a limitation? I would be tempted to look for someone using a mer-cash base as an indie dyer and see if they have an offering. Whether to include alpaca or angora .. I would want to know the application before recommending. Alpaca is very warm and has no memory/recovery - it droops. Angora is fine but makes a fuzz/halo some ppl don't like. And it gets up your nose.

@Johannab @gannet um, it is for @DialMforMara do she can disclose use or not. Twitter is recommending Madelinetosh Tosh DK. (The only recommendation so far that has a hot pink. Everyone has the other two colours)

@Canageek
Yeah, I'm not thinking angora or alpaca for this project. I want something that holds a shape. Maybe cashmere/merino/nylon?
@Johannab @gannet

@DialMforMara @Johannab @Canageek there’s sock yarn with cashmere/merino content. The merino might have enough memory if you want just cashmere/merino. Nylon is a bit coarser, and a rule of thumb is that no matter how much cashmere you add, the final object will have a bit of scratch if there’s something scratchy in it.

I will ponder and check a couple of things.

Hm. Have you checked Ravelry for projects for something similar? You might be surprised what’s out there.

@gannet @DialMforMara @Canageek There are several nice merino, merino-nylon, or even cashmere-merino-nylon blend bases out there. I don't find nylon always means noticeably scratchier; a lot of nylon is long microfibre nowadays (same micron diameter as cashmere, long thread) and the wool content/quality can be much more variable.
