Here's the things I think would be a huge improvement for new people:

- A dark-on-light theme option in settings by default. github.com/tootsuite/mastodon/ Let people see the UI before signing up.

- That "find new people" thing Gargrodon gave up on a while back because everyone was presh about it. github.com/tootsuite/mastodon/

- Popular hashtags. github.com/tootsuite/mastodon/

- Account migration! github.com/tootsuite/mastodon/

- Muting boosts from specific people.

- The word Twitter will not summon Voldemort, people.

@cassolotl I agree with muting boosts and a choice between dark or light theme

But I don’t think I’ll ever like the idea of popular hashtags or ‘find new people’ personally tbh :-/

@Miffy That's fair enough! Are you opposed to them existing or is it just that you would heartily ignore them, if it is okay to ask?

@cassolotl opposed to them existing tbh?
I could live with ignoring em, but wouldn’t be happy about it

@Miffy Ohh fair enough! Are you concerned that they'd have a negative effect?

@cassolotl basically yeah, I know it’s called slippery slope falicy for a reason, but I’m worried how this could be manipulated and misused by bad actors? Or if it could lead to an overload of recommended stuff?

Idk. Like just personally not comfortable with it, not for any ideological oss reason (cuz I’m not a tech person) but cuz I’ve seen this pattern on how reccomeded stuff was added on tumblr?

@Miffy I get you! Thank you for explaining. :) It's a thing I use on Twitter quite a lot so I would definitely use it here, but I can also understand that the way people behave is affected by how they are "watched", and trending topics is totally a way in which users are watched. Things to think about. Thank you!

@cassolotl @Miffy They can also disrupt hashtag chats, if we ever do those. I used to be active on on twitter, and every time it got too popular, we would pack up shop for the night as it would trend, and then randos would start tweeting about CRPGs with it, not knowing there was a chat going on with it.
