Question:

Years ago when I fixed more computers I kept a copy of a Knoppix CD handy. It worked quite well, but seemed to be updating less and less. But I moved on from doing that and so didn't keep up.

Recently I needed to fix a computer, so I set up a XBuntu flash drive. Worked, but SUPER slow. Not snappy like Knoppix was.

So what is the current fast running, optimized live distro? Is Knoppix still the best for that?

@Canageek I never used Knopix. I might be to green in the Linux business. I think MX Linux is pretty awesome and lightweight, and it has some cool tools for live sessions.

@eladhen How snappily does it run? Both back in 2007 and now *buntu flavours run like a truck stuck in mud in the live version.

@Canageek That's not my experience with Buntus, so our expectations may be quite different. If you want a super snappy live usb you can check what's going on in the Puppy Linux world. I tried Tahrpup a couple of years ago and it was blazing fast, but it might be a bit old by now. MX Linux is pretty fast but it's not all that different from Xubuntu.

@eladhen don't know. Was a fast computer. Slow USB, but not slower than a CDROM

@Canageek I used to use crunchbang, but that died and I switched to lubuntu which works ok, but it's been a long time since I tried anything in a computer with less than 4GB of ram.

@Rumpelcita Have you used them in Live mode much? They seem to work perfectly once installed, but slow out of RAM?

@Canageek no, not really. They took their time to boot but were fine once they did. This was a while ago. I also had nice results with Debian, also a long time ago.

@Canageek yes, plain debian. Crunchbang was pretty much plain debian with a cool config and a couple of scripts.
