I've tried to assume that the GNOME developers have good reason for removing features, hiding configuration in gconf or the tweak tool, or making core gnome-shell functionality dependent on JavaScript-based extensions.
But removing the ability to run executable files from the file mangler has me thinking that GNOME developers honestly believe that their primary user story is a precocious toddler who needs adult supervision and can't be trusted with real Unix.

@Canageek As a matter of fact, there is. Somebody forked KDE 3.x and continued working on it as the Trinity Desktop Environment.
