normal functional people: it's Friday time to hit the clubbbbb

me: *already in pajamas at 1830* my soul is barely attached to my body but maybe blankets and food delivery will keep it in place a while longer

Still some of the best advice for programmers:

Don't be clever. Be obvious.

When people go on movie dates, do they just part ways immediately after the movie ends, and that's why nobody likes movie dates? Because that's not how you do it

The movie is just a prelude to the normal dinner date afterwards; that way, if it turns out you have nothing else to talk about, you can at least talk about the movie, and it isn't a COMPLETELY awkward nightmare. That's why movie dates are good

A metaphor for what transitioning is like (±)

People who think that there would be no scientists or "innovation" without capitalism seem to be living in some imaginary world where scientists get paid a lot. People become scientists *despite* capitalism. Capitalism tries to sabotage science at every turn.

“Just install Linux on it” is the “just change the engine of your car” of tech.

Not everyone is a mechanic, not everyone wants to be a mechanic, and, if we want a world where freedom is the norm, we must stop expecting everyone to become a mechanic.

Note: this is not because these people are too dumb to be mechanics. It’s because they’re brain surgeons and space-shuttle pilots and they have three kids and they care for a loved one and they don’t have time to also be a mechanic.

it cant be overstated what a neccesary medical service informed consent HRT is, before this was available getting HRT meant talking to a therapist for three months and hinged upon coming up with the right answer for questions like "how many times a day do you jack off?"

Todd Anderson runs a talk/presentation/performance series in NYC called WordHack for people "working at the intersection of language and technology"—it's consistently excellent and a very important community for me. anyway, he's doing an open call for presenters in 2019: docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAI if you're in NYC (or plan to be on any of the listed dates) and you think your work fits the bill, you should sign up!

You know what I think didn't really exist 10 years ago and absolutely does now?
An understanding that before we trans women transitioned, we still had certain things in common. It's the idea that nascent trans women are diverse, but not disparate.

That we were all caterpillars of one kind or another, who didn't know we were caterpillars really, and now we're all moths and butterflies. And once we get flying around, we're like "omg! Look! I'm hanging out with other moths!"

Would it be bad if I started using ‘seance’ as a verb to mean ‘figure out some undocumented technology’?

Like ‘Ugh I have to seance with this FORTRAN codebase that hasn’t been touched in 10 years.’
