Why did the ruins in Rome become abandoned in the first place?
I'm walking through the Roman Forum right now, and there are so many buildings that just are empty and ruined, but *why*? Why did people leave and allow them to fall into disrepair? Rome was populated throughout its history, so what happened to make these beautiful areas with tons of art undesirable enough to allow them to fall into ruin?
@Alamantus if you’re still in Rome, swing by the Theater of Marcellus! Not every edifice was left to ruin.
